Most bookshops close when people finish work. This one opens properly when they finish dinner. By ten, every armchair is taken and the queue for the till is longer than it was at lunch.

## A different kind of customer

The daytime crowd knows what it wants. The night crowd comes to browse. They stay longer, buy more slowly and ask better questions. The owner says the evening hours pay for themselves twice over.

## How the shelves are arranged

Not by genre, but by mood: books for a train, books for a bad week, books to read aloud. It sounds like a gimmick until you find yourself leaving with three novels you had never heard of.

## Why it works

A bookshop at midnight feels like a secret, even when it is full. People talk to strangers. They recommend things. The staff say it is the friendliest shift of the day.
