Watch a café terrace on a Saturday morning and count the newspapers. A few years ago you would have needed one hand. Now the regulars bring their own, folded open at the crossword.

## A finished thing

A newspaper ends. You can reach the last page, fold it and leave it on the table for the next person. Few things we read on a screen ever give us that feeling.

## Slower news

The Saturday edition is written to be read with coffee, not refreshed. Long reports, a few reviews, letters from readers. It assumes you have an hour, and it is right more often than not.

## The crossword effect

Ask the people on the terrace why they buy it and many will mention the puzzles first. Fifteen minutes with a pen, then the news, then a second coffee.
