Clémence Aubry on wearing pink every day

The stylist explains why she gave up black, and what happened to her clients when she did.

Clémence Aubry has dressed actors, musicians and at least one minister. For the last six years she has dressed herself almost entirely in pink. We met in her studio, which is, predictably, not pink at all.

Why pink?

"I wore black for fifteen years because everyone in the industry did. One morning I put on a pink jacket for a joke, and people talked to me differently all day. Softer. More openly. I never went back."

Does it work for clients?

"Not pink, necessarily. But one colour that belongs to them. People think a uniform is boring. A colour uniform is the opposite: it makes you recognisable without trying."

A colour uniform makes you recognisable without trying.

The one piece of advice

"Buy the colour in the fabric you love most, not the cut you think you need. You will wear a good fabric in a strange colour far more often than a perfect cut in a safe one."
