A white town above the sea

Whitewash every spring, blue shutters every five years and a view nobody gets used to.

Every spring, before the visitors arrive, the whole town is painted white again. Walls, steps, even the lines between the paving stones.

Why white

It keeps the houses cool and reflects the summer light. It also makes the town look new every year, even though most of it is centuries old.

The view

Houses step down the hill to the water. From any roof terrace you see the harbour, the next island and, on clear days, the one after that.

Staying a while

Rent a room for a week rather than a night. The town only makes sense once you have walked it in the morning, before the boats come in.
